God’s Country

2021-Present

God’s Country is an ongoing project exploring the religious presence in Southeast Poland and my native region in the Lubelskie voivodeship, known for higher poverty rates and heavier religious influence. The body of work is an exploration of the dichotomy of this Catholic omnipresence that seeps into every aspect of Polish society and everyday life. On one hand I show its beauty and cultural significance of the shrines taken care of across generations and how they blend Catholicism and Slavic Pagan roots, and the sense of community that is found through tradition. On the other hand, I explore its much darker side - the corruption of the church, its repression of minorities. the rising nationalism in rural regions and the growing divide among the Polish population in regards to separation of church from state. Through capturing this, I reckon with these conflicting feelings towards my roots.
